Taught Time in Compulsory Education - Database / Definitions

Artistic activities comprise subject areas such as basic aesthetics, music, drawing, art, drama, crafts, sewing, woodwork, metalwork, home economics.

Core curriculum options comprise a set of subjects from among which pupils have to select one or more in order to cover part of their compulsory curriculum.

Flexible timetable: In some countries, the regional authorities, local authorities or schools themselves are relatively autonomous in determining how time should be allocated to teaching. When the amount of time to be allocated to the various compulsory subjects is not fixed, or when fixed amounts of time for these subjects are supplemented, in the curriculum, by a certain number of hours of teaching that can be allocated by schools or their pupils to whatever subjects they wish, this number of hours should be indicated in the flexible timetable column.

Full-time compulsory education is the period during which the provision of educational instruction for young people is compulsory (irrespective of whether or not such provision occurs at school). In general, this period covers the age-range from 5/6 to 15/16. It corresponds everywhere to ISCED levels 1 and 2 and, in some countries, may also overlap with ISCED level 0, as in Luxembourg and the Netherlands, or one or two years of ISCED level 3, as in France, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, the United Kingdom (England/Wales/Northern Ireland), Bulgaria, Hungary and the Slovak Republic.

Human sciences comprise subject areas such as school life and culture, environmental education, history, geography, social and political education, civics, hygiene, health education, sex education and road safety.

Information and communication technology (ICT): When ICT is included in the curriculum, two main approaches may be distinguished. ICT may be taught either as a separate subject in its own right, or used as a tool and/or, in some cases, for carrying out projects, interdisciplinary or otherwise. In the former case, the number of hours a year is labelled as ‘ICT as a separate subject’ as such in the database. In other cases, the results are shown under ‘ICT as a tool’.

Mainstream refers to school years with a common curriculum for all pupils. In most countries, this covers full time compulsory education (which means primary and lower secondary levels), but in some cases separate tracks (see definition) exist from lower secondary level onwards.

Other: comprises subject areas such as ancient languages, including Latin and Greek.

Primary education begins between four and seven years of age. It is compulsory in all countries and generally lasts from five to six years.

Public-sector school refers to a school financed and directly administered by the public or government authorities.

Religious/ethics refers also to philosophical studies.

Secondary education continues the basic programmes of primary education, although teaching is typically more subject-focused.
Sport comprises subject areas such as psychomotor training, education in corporal movement, physical and sports education and swimming.

Total taught hours corresponds to the number of hours spent in the classroom by pupils in a year, which are devoted solely to teaching. It does not include playtime or lunch or similar breaks.

Tracks cover distinctly different curricula at secondary level, in all academic subjects, and lead to different destinations upon completion of secondary schooling. Distinctions are common for academic education, general education, technical education and vocational education.
